How to Tell If Your Fascia Is Rotted

Fascia rot is rarely visible from the ground until it’s advanced. Most of it is discovered when gutters come off for replacement — or when gutters start pulling away because there’s nothing solid left to hold them.

"Wood rot at the roofline spreads faster in Illinois than homeowners expect. One bad winter and what was a board replacement becomes a rafter repair."

Wood Rot Repair — Illinois

Why We Catch It Before Others Do

Fascia and soffit rot is a roofline problem — and roofline work is what we do. Every gutter, roof repair, and roof replacement project includes a probe of the fascia and soffit. When we find rot, we fix it in the same visit.

Full extent mapped before repair begins

Rot spreads beyond what’s visible. We probe adjacent boards and check whether damage has reached the rafter tails before quoting the scope.

PVC replacement — won't rot again

We replace rotted wood fascia with PVC where possible: identical appearance, zero moisture absorption, no painting, no repeat of the same problem.

Bundled with gutter and roof work

Gutters attach directly to the fascia. If both need replacing, we do it in one visit — new gutters attach to sound material, one mobilization.

Source addressed, not just the symptom

Fascia rot almost always has a cause: overflowing gutters, a missing drip edge, or failed caulk. We identify and correct it so the repair lasts.

Four Areas.
One Project.

Fascia, soffit, rafter tails, and drip edge are all connected. Rot in one area rarely stays there — we assess and repair the full scope in a single project.

Fascia Boards

The horizontal board running along the roofline that gutters attach to. The first and most common site of rot — clogged gutters overflow directly onto it for years before damage becomes visible.

Soffit Panels

The underside of the roof overhang. Damaged or missing soffit allows moisture and pests into the roof structure. Inadequate soffit ventilation also contributes to ice dams and attic moisture problems.

Rafter Tails

When fascia rot is left long enough, moisture reaches the rafter tails — the structural ends of the roof framing. Rafter tail damage is significantly more involved to repair and is avoided by addressing fascia rot early.

Drip Edge & Flashing

A missing or incorrectly installed drip edge is one of the most common causes of fascia rot — water runs behind the gutter and saturates the board. We replace drip edge as part of any fascia replacement.

Replacement Materials

Wood or PVC — Our Recommendation

When replacing rotted fascia, material choice determines how long before the same problem returns. Here’s our honest breakdown.

PVC Fascia Board

Looks identical to painted wood, never absorbs moisture, never rots, and never needs painting. The extra material cost pays back within a single paint cycle. Our default recommendation for Illinois homes.

Aluminum-Wrapped Wood

Wood core with aluminum cladding on exposed surfaces. Combines structural rigidity with a maintenance-free face. A strong choice where color-matching to existing trim is important.

Primed Wood

Lower upfront cost, authentic character. Requires painting every 5–7 years and disciplined caulk maintenance to prevent moisture entry. We’ll use it when the project calls for it, but we’ll tell you what the maintenance commitment looks like.

Almost Always Done Together

Fascia and soffit work is almost never a standalone job — it surfaces during other roofline projects. We handle all three in a single visit.

Gutter Replacement

Gutters attach to fascia. If fascia is rotted, gutters come off anyway — we replace both together so new gutters attach to sound material.

Roof Replacement

Drip edge and fascia are inspected on every roof replacement. Rotted boards are replaced before new roofing goes down.

Siding Installation

Siding replacement almost always exposes fascia and soffit conditions that need addressing. We handle both in the same project.

Fascia & Soffit FAQ

What Illinois homeowners ask before scheduling a roofline repair.
How do I know if my fascia boards are rotted?
Key signs include gutters pulling away from the roofline, soft or spongy wood when you press on the fascia face, paint that keeps peeling in the same spot, dark staining behind the gutter, and visible cracks at the fascia-to-soffit joint. In many cases rotted fascia isn’t visible from the ground — it’s discovered when gutters are removed. We probe all fascia and soffit boards on every gutter and roofing project.
The most common causes are clogged gutters that overflow and saturate the fascia, ice dams backing water under the roofline, a missing or incorrectly installed drip edge, failed caulk at the fascia-soffit joint, and inadequate soffit ventilation that traps moisture. Illinois freeze-thaw cycles accelerate deterioration — wood that’s repeatedly saturated and frozen breaks down significantly faster than in milder climates.
Fascia board replacement typically runs $8–$15 per linear foot installed, depending on material (wood, PVC, or aluminum-wrapped) and extent of rot. Soffit replacement runs $10–$18 per linear foot. Most projects also include new gutters when the fascia is being replaced, since gutters attach directly to it. We provide detailed line-item estimates after inspecting the affected areas.
For Illinois homes we generally recommend PVC or aluminum-wrapped fascia over wood replacement. PVC never rots, doesn’t require painting, and handles freeze-thaw cycles without the moisture absorption that causes wood to fail. Wood can be used where historical accuracy matters, but requires painting and caulk maintenance every 5–7 years to prevent the same problem recurring.
Yes — and this is almost always the right approach. Gutters attach directly to the fascia, so if the fascia is being replaced, gutters come off anyway. Replacing both in the same project saves on labor, ensures new gutters attach to sound material, and means you don’t revisit the roofline again for years. We coordinate gutter and fascia replacement as a single project by default.
