How Long Does It Take to Replace a Roof?

Short answer: the actual install on a typical home takes 1 to 3 days for asphalt shingles — often just one. Metal runs about 4 to 6 days and tile 8 to 9. But the install is only the loud part. From signing the estimate to the final cleanup, the whole project usually spans a few weeks, mostly waiting on permits and materials.

When people ask how long a roof takes, they usually mean two different things: how many days will there be a crew on my house, and how long from “yes” to “done.” Here’s both — the on-roof time by material, the full start-to-finish timeline, and what can stretch it out.

The short version

On an average home, asphalt takes 1–3 days to install, metal 4–6, and tile 8–9. Larger or more complex roofs run 5–7 days. Counting the estimate, permit, and material ordering, the full project typically takes 2–4 weeks start to finish.

Install time by material

The hands-on install time depends most on your material and roof size. For an average home (roughly 1,500–2,500 sq ft of roof area):

Material

Typical install time

Asphalt shingles

1–3 days (often 1)

Standing seam metal

4–6 days

Clay / concrete tile

8–9 days

Large roof (4,000+ sq ft)

5–7 days

Metal and slate take longer because they’re precision materials — more cutting, forming, and detail work per square foot. That’s time well spent: it’s the custom metalwork we fabricate in-house, and it’s what makes those roofs last decades longer.

What affects the timeline

Two similar-looking homes can be a day or two apart. The variables:

  • Roof size — more square footage, more time.
  • Pitch and complexity — steep roofs are slower and more careful work; skylights, chimneys, dormers, and lots of valleys all add hours.
  • Tear-off layers — stripping one old layer is quick; removing two or three takes noticeably longer.
  • Decking repairs — if the crew finds rotted wood once the old roof is off, replacing it adds time (and is worth doing right).
  • Crew size — a full, experienced crew finishes a job a small one would stretch over several days.
  • Weather — see below.

The full timeline, start to finish

The crew being on your roof is just one step. Here’s the realistic whole-project timeline:

  • Estimate & inspection (day 1) — we measure the roof, assess condition, and give you an itemized estimate.
  • Permit & material ordering (about 1–2 weeks) — the village permit and your chosen materials are lined up. This is usually the longest wait, and most of it happens without anyone at your house.
  • Installation (1–3 days for asphalt) — tear-off, deck inspection, dry-in, and the new roof.
  • Final cleanup & inspection (same day as finish) — full debris and nail cleanup, plus a walkthrough.

Add it up and a typical asphalt replacement runs about 2 to 4 weeks from signing to finished — even though the noisy part is over in a day or two. Pricing for all of it is broken down in our roof replacement cost guide.

The crew is on your roof for a day or two. The reason the project spans weeks is permits and materials — and that's time working for you, not wasted.

Does weather delay a roof replacement?

In Illinois, yes — it’s the most common reason a schedule slips. Rain, snow, ice, and thunderstorms pause work for safety and to keep the roof deck dry during install. And cold matters: asphalt shingles won’t seal properly below about 40–45°F, so deep-winter installs need cold-weather methods or a warmer window.

A good roofer plans around the forecast rather than pushing through it. We’d rather add a day than install onto a wet deck — the roof you’re paying for should be done right, not just fast.

What to expect on install day

So you know what a normal day looks like:

  • Early arrival & setup — protecting landscaping, siding, and windows before anything comes off.
  • Tear-off — removing the old roof down to the deck.
  • Deck inspection — checking for and replacing any rotted wood.
  • Dry-in — underlayment and ice-and-water shield, so the roof is protected even mid-job.
  • Installation — the new roofing, flashing, and details.
  • Cleanup — debris hauled off and a magnetic sweep for stray nails, then a final walkthrough.

The install on an average home takes 1–3 days for asphalt shingles — often just one day — about 4–6 days for metal, and 8–9 for tile. Larger or complex roofs run 5–7 days. Counting the estimate, permit, and material ordering, the full project usually spans about 2–4 weeks from signing to completion.

Often, yes. Many average-sized asphalt shingle roofs are torn off and replaced in a single day by a full crew, provided the weather cooperates and no major decking repairs are needed. Larger, steeper, or more complex roofs — and materials like metal or tile — take longer.

A standing seam metal roof typically takes about 4–6 days on an average home — longer than asphalt because metal requires more precise cutting, forming, and detail work per square foot. That extra time is part of why a properly installed metal roof lasts 40–70 years.

Beyond the 1–3 day install, plan for an estimate and inspection, then roughly 1–2 weeks to secure the village permit and order materials, followed by installation and same-day cleanup and walkthrough. Altogether, a typical asphalt replacement takes about 2–4 weeks from signing to finished.

Yes — in Illinois it’s the most common cause of a schedule change. Rain, snow, ice, and storms pause work for safety and to keep the deck dry, and asphalt shingles won’t seal below about 40–45°F. A good roofer schedules around the forecast rather than installing onto a wet or frozen deck.
